Earlier this fall, I interviewed a couple dozen individuals in preparation for writing my next book. No less than five of those interviewees recommended the book that became this week’s “read this”:
As such, the nonfiction book, Do I Stay Christian?, by Brian McLaren is my book of the week.
Here’s why I loved it:
Brian wasn’t afraid to go there. Take, for example, this sentence: “Jesus never tortured or killed or ruined the life of anyone, but the same cannot be said for the religion that claims to follow him.” I think there are a lot of folks that fit into this category: they don’t suppose Jesus is such a bad guy, but they could care less about Christianity.
The book was laid out into three simple parts: No, Yes, and How. As a writer, this encouraged me in my own process - after all, sometimes just breaking something down into itty-bitty pieces is exactly what’s needed in order to understand the bigger picture.
Along these lines, the three parts also gave infinite permission to readers, which Brian so graciously offered. If, after reading the “No” section, a reader felt like they really couldn’t continue on with the Christian faith, Brian left it there. Persuasion wasn’t part of his argument; this is so important, especially in this kind of literature.
So, read this. You might just like it.

I haven’t read it, but I have been listening to McLaren’s podcast and it’s wonderful!!!
