Years ago, I asked my family to give me copies of their favorite books for Christmas. My father passed along a copy of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, with a note to read the chapters about the “cheerleaders” near the end if I didn’t have the time to read anything else. (Those chapters: sheesh).
This year, I want to give you something too: short blips of a favorite book I read in the last week.
Sometimes you’ll have the chance to win a copy; sometimes you’ll find a favorite new read; sometimes you’ll shake your head in the horror of my choice.
As such, Travels with Charley is my book of the week and here’s why:
It made me want to hop in the Kia with Rufus, along with a couple cans of soup and a stack of books, and drive across country. Children: optional (although they’d certainly make for a good story).
Having read many of his fiction books, I loved finally getting to know the real, nonfiction version of the man behind all those (brilliant) made-up stories and words.
This quote: “One goes, not so much to see but to tell afterward.” I’ve been thinking about that sentence all week.
So, read this. You just might like it!
